Violence on our American college campuses and in our neighboring communities is far from an inviting topic; yet it is a justifiable and necessary discussion that needs to be brought to the forefront. Our nation’s higher education institutions need to take a stand and establish a program that will seriously implement the steps required to eliminate this violence.
Universities need to ask: If budgets were cut and no more federal monies were available, how would you sustain a program that would eliminate violence?
Our national self-defense program is a comprehensive, effective, and sustainable program
available with implementable steps and its unique positioning strategy of knowledge is power.
Yet, knowledge is only as powerful as its sustainability. Knowledge too, must pay it forward and become embedded in the cultural, social, and academic frameworks of our higher education institutions; thereby, eliminating violence within our student population and neighboring communities.
Our self-defense training system is broken down into two segments: Instructor Certification and a 3-credit Self-Defense general elective course.

Research shows that 1 of the 3 predictive characteristics of mass K–12 school shootings involve the school shooter who is usually a 16-year-old white male with a history of depression and suicidal ideation, has recently been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder prior to the shooting incident, may have experienced peer or intimate partner rejection, and lacks parental support and supervision. Importantly, the shooter also lacks a feeling of belonging, connection, and healthy attachment styles, empathy, resiliency skills, and healthy coping mechanisms.
