International Review Board (IRB) Approved Research

We have been researching the impact of The Dorey Method™ Program of Integrative Study (formerly The Freedom Legacy) on an individual’s emotional-social functioning since 2012 with great success. The targeted group populations that have been included in this research have been inter- and intra-personal violence (IIPV) victims in several relational environments, such as domestic/family violence, sexual assault, violent crime, and human-trafficked victims. In the future, we hope to take #TheDoreyMethod into the environments of incarceration and recently paroled to research the abusers, male and female, of IIPV.

We believe that IIPV can be broken.

Trauma Bonding in Sex-Trafficked Women: A Mixed Methods Quasi-Experiment Study / IRB-FY-23-24-2164

Partnership: Liberty University and MHS, Inc.

Location: To be determined

Dates: 2025

Subject Pool: Female sex-trafficked victims, 18+ years of age

Below is a synopsis of what is involved –

Step 1: Study Participant Inclusionary/Exclusionary Criteria

• Biological sex-trafficked females with no minimum or maximum duration; English-speaking with a minimum 4th grade reading and writing level of education; 18 years of age or older; and willing to develop their skills in emotional-social intelligence (ESI), creative problem-solving, and Christian doctrine. Conversely, the exclusionary participant criteria will include being a non-biological female, e.g., a male who identifies as a trans-female; non-English speaking with less than a 4th grade reading and writing level of education; 17 years of age or younger; and unwilling to develop their skills in ESI, creative problem-solving, and Christian doctrine.

Step 2: Complete the Participant Consent Form

Step 3: Be Screened and Diagnosed with Trauma Bonding[1]

• This includes the Trauma Bonding Rate of Prevalence assessment (TBRP–A) and Biopsychosocial-Spiritual (BPSS) assessment. Each assessment can be completed by the participant in written form, or I can conduct the screening process over the telephone with it being audio recorded. The TBRP–A is composed of 54 questions that addresses trauma bonding’s complex symptomatology in its six constructs, e.g., cognitive, emotional-social, physical, spiritual, societal, and financial; and usually takes 15–20 minutes to complete. The BPSS is composed of 39 qualitative questions that will align with and confirm the TBRP–A results; and usually takes 30–45 minutes to complete.

Step 4: Complete the Brief Demographic Form

• This form can be completed in written form and usually takes about 10–15 minutes to complete. The following demographics will be collected: name; birth date; contact information; age; number of children; sexual persuasion; cultural/racial identity; religious denomination; level of education; marital status; employment status; length of being sex-trafficked with beginning and ending age; the trafficking city, state/province, and country of trafficking origin; and the trafficker’s role, e.g., family member, intimate partner, or if the participant was a runaway or was kidnapped.

Step 5: Complete the PRE Instrumentation

• This includes the Emotional Quotient Inventory 2.0 (EQi® 2.0), the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (SAI), and the Person Environment Fit Scale for Creativity (PEFSC). These materials will be administered by me and should take between 15–30 minutes each to complete. The EQi® 2.0 is composed of 133 questions that addresses a person’s emotional-social intelligence in its five constructs, e.g., self-perception, self-expression, interpersonal, stress management, and decision making; and usually takes about 15–30 minutes to complete. The EQi® 2.0 also includes a problem-solving subscale that will be used as a separate instrument, in which data will already be gathered when completing the EQi® 2.0. The SAI is composed of 54 questions that addresses a person’s relationship with and awareness of God and should take about 15 minutes to complete. The PEFSC is composed of 44 questions and should take about 15 minutes to complete. Pre instrumentation can be done in a group setting, or one-on-one in-person or over the telephone with it being audio recorded.

• In conjunction to these materials, participants will complete the qualitative counterparts of the EQi® 2.0, EQ Problem Solving, SAI, and PEFSC, which can be completed in written form if preferred and then reviewed with me on an individual basis.

Step 6: Complete the 12-week Treatment Program[2]

• Experimental Group participants will be asked to complete semi-structured interview questions from the Debriefing Feedback Tool, which takes about 5–7 minutes, after each of the 12, 3 to 6-hour group sessions. Participants will spend about 36–72 hours during the treatment program, plus 12 hours of suggested (not mandated) homework – for a total of 58–94 hours per participant.

Step 7: Complete the POST Instrumentation

• Steps 3 and 5 will be completed again.

Location Logistics

• I reside in the Albany, NY area; however, I travel every month to the Rochester and Buffalo, NY regions and can conduct this research study at any location in the upstate NY and tri-state regions in-person. I also can conduct this research study virtually should that be necessary. Additionally, I am agreeable to work with only control group participants who are or are not currently in a treatment program.

[1] Instrumentation is proprietary and copyrighted; however, instrumentation can be shared with organizations/participants participating in the research study.

[2] Only the experimental group participants complete the 12-week treatment program in addition to Steps 1–5 and 7; conversely, the control group participants only complete Steps 1–5 and 7.
