Institutional Review Board (IRB) Approved Research

We have been researching the impact of The Dorey Method™ Program of Integrative Study (formerly The Freedom Legacy) on an individual’s emotional-social functioning since 2012 with great success. The targeted group populations that have been included in this research have been inter- and intra-personal violence (IIPV) victims in several relational environments, such as domestic/family violence, sexual assault, violent crime, and human-trafficked victims. In the future, we hope to take #TheDoreyMethod into the environments of incarceration and recently paroled to research the abusers, male and female, of IIPV.

We believe that IIPV can be broken.

endorsement: trauma bonding in sex-trafficked women research

by Joseph Jackson – Independent Researcher, Former LEO Professional, & Brain Injury Survivor

This dissertation establishes a profound and necessary foundation for understanding trauma bonding in female sex-trafficked victims. The breakdown of complex symptomatology into cognitive, emotional-social, physical, spiritual, societal, and financial constructs provides a clear and exhaustive roadmap for treatment. Having spent 16 years working in juvenile justice and the sheriff's office, I have seen these exact constructs paralyze victims on the street, frequently watching young women repeatedly return to dangerous environments because the trauma bond completely overrides their instinct for physical safety. The specific focus on the spiritual construct, evaluating a victim's belief, trust, and love in God, is a crucial addition to the field.

This aligns perfectly with the psychological comfort found in Psalm 34:18, which reminds us that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The problem statement effectively highlights the critical gap in the current diagnostic criteria of the American Psychiatric Association, justifying the urgent need for this comprehensive study.

The theoretical and historical frameworks presented demonstrate exceptional academic rigor. The synthesis of psychological well-being, positive mental health, and the emotional-social intelligence framework creates a robust lens for examining trauma bonding. The integration of the 21st Century Creative Problem-Solving model alongside the Holy Ghost Guiding theory seamlessly bridges clinical psychology with Christian doctrine. This dual approach echoes the psychological resilience described in 2 Timothy 1:7, stating that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind. The exhaustive review of accelerated learning theory and the bioecological environment implications further solidifies the multifaceted approach required to address the deep-rooted trauma experienced by these women. It is one thing to study systemic isolation in an academic setting, but witnessing the cycle of debt-bondage and reliance on government assistance firsthand confirms how profoundly these factors keep survivors trapped without true economic independence.

The methodological approach demonstrates both precision and adaptability. The shift to a convergent mixed methods single-subject multiple-baseline design showcases a pragmatic response to the real-world challenges of recruiting a highly vulnerable population. The exhaustive presentation of the experiment, detailing the setting, the specific baseline and treatment phases, and the rigorous instrumentation, ensures complete transparency. The dual role of researcher and practitioner is handled with necessary objectivity through the strict practice of bracketing biases, adding profound empathy to the scientific process.

The presentation of the quantitative and qualitative findings for the participants is handled with the utmost care and detail. The chronological progression through the baseline, treatment, and post-treatment phases clearly illustrates the longitudinal efficacy of the transtheoretical treatment program. The thematic development highlights significant breakthroughs, particularly in how stress and dangerous environments influence decision-making. During high-stress interventions in the field, the lack of emotional regulation is often the greatest barrier to providing immediate help, making the focus on emotional-social intelligence highly practical. This cognitive restructuring is a psychological parallel to Romans 12:2, which speaks to being transformed by the renewing of your mind rather than conforming to the patterns of a broken world. The mixed methods integration provides a compelling narrative, proving that as emotional regulation increases through tangible tools like the Self-Belief System, victims experience measurable personal and spiritual growth.

The discussion and implications successfully connect the lived experiences of the participants back to the theoretical literature. The conclusion that the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQi® 2.0) and its problem-solving subscale can serve as clinical diagnostic tools is a major contribution to the field. The empirical, theoretical, and practical recommendations for future research offer a clear path forward, emphasizing the urgent need for a standardized diagnostic tool and treatment protocol. The unwavering focus on the relationship between the treatment program and the dependent variables proves the immense value of this research.

The inclusion of the exhaustive supplementary materials guarantees the study can be replicated and validated by future researchers and advocates. The comprehensive session-by-session agendas for the trauma-informed transtheoretical treatment program provide an invaluable resource for practitioners entering this difficult field. The detailed psychometric instruments, clinical assessments, and raw qualitative data demonstrate absolute thoroughness. The meticulous documentation of informed consent, Institutional Review Board approval, and the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual model ensures the highest ethical standards were maintained throughout the entirety of this monumental dissertation.

Trauma Bonding in Sex-Trafficked Women: A Single-Subject Multiple-Baseline Mixed Methods Study / IRB

Partnership: Liberty University and MHS, Inc.

Location: Northeastern United States

Dates: February 2025 – June 2025

Subject Pool: Female sex-trafficked victims, 18+ years of age

Below is the abstract of the conducted research to be published May 2026 –

Trauma bonding was studied in a convergent mixed methods single-subject multiple-baseline experiment research design that captured the lived experiences of two female sex-trafficked victims. The relationship between the transtheoretical treatment program as the independent variable and the dependent variables of trauma bonding, the ESI framework of EQ, creative problem-solving, Christian doctrine, and the creative environment were investigated.

While the moderated mediation Hayes Model 89 statistical program initially was proposed to analyze quantitative data, the study design was revised to reflect the N = 2 subject pool.

The TBRP–A, EQi® 2.0, SAI, and PEFSC were used as quantitative instruments, along with their related qualitative questionnaires of the BPSS, EQ, EQ Problem Solving, SAI, and PEFSC. A pragmatic worldview to research is shared. A background, statement, and purpose of the problem and its significance to this study are presented; along with an epilogue to Chapter 3 to reflect the single-subject multiple-baseline design. The quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research questions are included.

A literature review is presented that includes the problem of trauma bonding and sex trafficking with its related complex symptomatology factors and predictors. Theoretical and historical conceptual frameworks are included. Related literature on trauma bonding definitions, factors, predictors, prevalence rates, and treatment approaches are included. Meta-inferences from data integration with future directions are presented.
